A theatrical version of the 1951 classic movie Awaara, directed by Raj Kapoor, will be released through a collaborative move between India and China. Awaara being one of the most successful films of all time, was selected to be recreated for its immense popularity throughout South Asia.
The movie's song Awaara Hoon and the director Raj Kapoor who himself played the lead role in the film have become an icon in the Indian film industry and internationally.
The agreement was incorporated in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF)Indian Consul General in Shanghai Prakash Gupta
The MOU between ICCR and CSIAF which was signed on Thursday in Shanghai calls for cultural performances to be organised in India and China during 2017 and 2018.
The representatives of both the countries decided to go ahead with the project after Amarendra Khatua, Director General of the ICCR visited Shanghai to take part in the 18th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Gupta said that both the countries will join together to produce the theatrical form of the legendary movie in order for the new generation to watch and realise the legacy.
Like in the Soviet Union, China, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Romania, Awaara remained the most popular Indian movie in China in the last six and half decades among all generations of the Chinese.
The title song of the movie Awaara Hoon is well known among the Chinese people with a slight variation “awaala hu” as the letter R is absent in Mandarin.
Though a few Bollywood movies like 3 idiots were admired by Chinese people, none of it has been able to break the records of Awaara.
The new version is expected to hit the theatres by next year. The Raj Kapoor movie became a blockbuster in and out of the country through the stunning performance of Kapoor's real-life father Prithviraj Kapoor and his youngest real-life brother Shashi Kapoor.
The music composed by the team of Shankar Jaikishan, especially the song "Awaara Hoon" (I am a Tramp), sung by Mukesh with lyrics by Shailendra was the main factor that made the movie a phenomenal hit.
There are innumerable versions of the song available online, including the Turkish version.
The song sung by a Russian has also gone viral on social media.
