Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has announced that it will confer the Degree of Letters (Honoris Causa ) to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The degree will be conferred in a special convocation on 1st May.
University sources said that the Turkish President's visit will strengthen the academic ties between Turkey and India, especially with Jamia.
JMI is the only university in the country offering diploma and a three years undergraduate course in the Turkish language.
Coordinator of Turkish Language and Literature Programme in JMI Dr Mujib Alam told NDTV that the Turkish leader's visit will enhance the academic ties between both the countries.
"We welcome Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Jamia. The visit of the president will be very fruitful for the education sector and other sectors, so that further collaborations may be made between India and Turkey in future", he said.
The founder of Turkish language programme in India Dr. Mohsin Ali, meanwhile, said that Jamia and Yunus Emre Institutive from Republic of Turkey are working together for running these courses and the latter provides teachers and text books needed for the courses.
Another Guest Lecturer of Turkish language at Jamia Millia Islamia told NDTV that the attempts to spread the Turkish language is instrumental in widening Turkish soft power and Erdogan is successful in it.
JMI Chancellor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) M. A. Zaki will award the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) in the event that will be held at the university's Dr. M. A. Ansari Auditorium on May 1.
Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, JMI will read the citation for Mr. Erdogan.
