Trollers had a field day on Thursday after a new statue of Cristiano Ronaldo was unveiled at Madeira airport, Portugal.

The statue was heavily criticised on microblogging website for lack of resemblance to the star player.

The airport was also renamed after him, raising many eyebrows.

The new name of the airport is ‘Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo’.

However, an excited Ronaldo who took part in the unveiling ceremony said that he was honoured and felt so proud.

“Seeing my name being given to this airport is something very special, everyone knows that I am proud of my country and especially my home city”, he said.

Thank you very much to the president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque for having had the courage and the firmness to do it. My friend, I never asked for this, but I’m not a hypocrite, and I’m happy and honoured.

He also said that some people may not agree with the decision to rename the airport.

“I know some people do not agree and I know some people who are not here would be happy for this moment… I will try to dignify Portugal and especially Madeira with a spirit of sacrifice, dignity and passion.” he said.

Responding to the trolls on social media, the sculptor behind the statue Emanuel Santos said his work is just "a matter of taste".

He also said that it was "not as simple as it seems" to create.

He also added that it took him 15 days to complete making it.
