Egyptian woman weighing 500 Kgs gets Indian visa for treatment as Sushma Swaraj intervenes

A bedridden Egyptian woman weighing 500kg was on Tuesday granted visa by the Indian Embassy in Cairo after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took up the issue.

Eman Ahmed, a 36-year-old resident of port city of Alexandria, was issued the medical visa after a Mumbai-based bariatric surgeon requested Swaraj to help the woman travel to India for her treatment.

Responding to the request, Swaraj tweeted: “Thanks for bringing this to my notice. We will definitely help her.”

Hours later, Dr Muffi Lakdawala, who as per his Twitter profile is also a philanthropist, tweeted that the Indian Embassy in Cairo granted a visa to Eman, a resident of Alexandria.

Earlier, seeking Swaraj's intervention, the doctor had said Eman weighs 500 kg and has been refused the visa. Eman's weight prevented her from pursuing her studies as she dropped out of school due to weight gain.
