After the mysterious death of Scarlett Keeling in 2008 who was drugged and rapped, on Tuesday morning the nude body of a foreign national was found under strange circumstances at an isolated open place at Adnem, Devabag, Canacona, South Goa.

Police identified the as that of 28-year-old Irish national Daniel McLeughim with a UK passport, have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Daniel had arrived at Canacona sub-district, known for its popular beaches like Palolem and Agonda, from Arambol in North Goa.

A 23 year old local criminal, Vikas Bhagat has been arrested after locals reported seeing him with tourist Danielle McLaughlin at the Palolem beach in south Goa on Holi.

According to the police, the deceased had come with a friend and had participated in Holi celebrations, before being found dead on Tuesday.

“We are investigating people with whom she was playing Holi during a party here. Her friend has also given us some leads and we are questioning some suspects,” a police officer familiar with the probe told reporters.

Police, who are suspecting rape, have sent the body to the Goa Medical College near Panaji for a post mortem.

Police sources informed that a local, Prashant Komarpant, noticed the body while he was on his way to the fields, at a woody spot some 300m from a kaccha road leading to some fields, and alerted the cops.

A sniffer dog squad, besides forensic and finger print experts were pressed into service. Some clues - empty beer cans, chip packets and bottle shards - have been collected, but police are yet to obtain any specific leads. While the police found the deceased's clothes, they are yet to locate the murder weapon.

So far the police has interrogated six suspects. The search for the victim's passport and belongings is on.
