BJP MLA from Deoband Brijesh Singh wants to rename constituency as Dev Vrand; ‘Town is more famous for its links to Maharabharat’

Amid reports about posters appeared in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh ordering Muslims to 'leave immediately' coming in, BJP MLA from Deoband, Brijesh Singh has said on Thursday that he will get his constituency's name changed to ‘Dev Vrand’.

The BJP MLA said he wanted to change the name as the town is more famous for its links to the Maharabharat.

Deoband is one of the most important places in the country as far as Muslim history is concerned as the Darul uloom Islamic school where the Deobandi Islamic movement began situates there.

Deoband is just a perception as this town is always famous as Dev Vrand only. We have Mahabharat’s Rankhandi here and the five Pandavas have worshiped here in Dev Vrand. Even the village named as Jarwala is actually Yakshawala and is the same place where ‘Yaksha’ has questioned Yudhisthir

Singh made the announcement during a ‘Holi Milan’ event.

Speaking at the event, he also claimed that Muslim women voted for him as they support BJP's stand on triple talaq.

He also thanked Muslim women saying that he would not have won if they would not have voted for him.

“Meri Muslim Behne Modi Ji Ke Sath Hai or We Bhi Chahti Hain Ki teen Talaq Band Ho,” he added.

Deoband, with a population of 65 percent Muslims, is one of the five constituencies in Saharanpur district of North UP.

BJP candidate Brijest Singh won the seat defeating BSP's Majid Ali.

It is famous for the Deobandi movement which began after 1857 revolt by Muslim scholar Shah Waliullah Dehlawi.

Darul Uloom, which is located in Deoband is one of the main centre of Islamic science and jurisprudence.

In 2017 election, BJP managed to win the assembly as Muslim vote in the constituency divided between SP and BSP.
