Maharashtra Professor attacked, arrested after he questioned why Shivaji’s birthday is celebrated twice

A professor from Maharashtra’s Raigad district was attacked by allegedly by students and colleagues before being taken into custody as he questioned why Shivaji’s birthday is celebrated twice a year.

According to reports, a professor and the head of department of commerce at the KMC college in Raigad Sunil Waghmare had posted the question about Shivaji’s birthday on a WhatsApp group which also had teachers on it. Another Professor Amol Nagargoje , who also teaches at the same college and the group admin is said to have reprimanded Waghmare and deleted the group later. News of the conversation had spread though and Waghmare was beaten up by students and teachers at the college and the police had to come in to help him. However, he was arrested under Section 295a (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious  beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code on a complaint filed by Nagargoje.

There is a dispute about Shivaji’s exact date-of-birth and it is celebrated twice a year, in February and March.

His comment created a stir among his college friends and colleagues. The admin of the group deleted the group same night while Waghmare was attacked by students and professors of the college Friday morning. They demanded lodging of a complaint against Waghmare for bringing insult to the glory of Shivaji

Nagargoje was quoted saying that he knew Nagargoje since 2012 and that he had asked Waghmare to take back the comment, but he didn’t. “So, I decided to delete the group altogether. On Friday, when I was in the staff room, I got to know that he was attacked. Later, because I was the admin of the group, I was asked by the police to register the complaint,” Nagargoje was quoted by the Mid-Day.

Cops have seized both Waghmare and Nagargoje’s phones. Waghmare remains in judicial custody after the court rejected his bail-plea citing a threat to his life outside jail.

“We thought the words used against him (Shivaji) did incite violence and thus we arrested him. We have seized the phones of Waghmare and the professor who lodged a complaint against him,” police aded added.
