A Dalit youth from Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh committed suicide by jumping in front of train for allegedly being boycotted by the village for allegedly killing a calf.
Police said 18-year-old Ramu was found dead on railway track nearly four km away from his house at Gopalpur Barandi village on Saturday morning.
He was socially boycotted by the villagers for killing his pet calf.
Itiyathok police Station Officer Ved Prakash Srivastava said he died after jumping infron of a train though a suicide note has not been found yet.
“He had come to know that villagers had decided to socially boycott him for killing his pet calf”, he said.
Ramu is an umarried. No one from his family has not yet complained about his death.
Police said he was staying along with his mother Cheriya Devi.
The incident that led to the suicide of Ramu took place three days ago. He hit his calf with a hammer while taking it to the field .
"Ramu tied animal in the field and returned home. Around two hours later, Ramu came to know through locals that calf had died because of the thrashing…”, Village Pradhan Usha Devi’s husband Balram Tiwari told Indian Express.
Tiwari said several meetings were held in the region following the incident as people sought to take action against him.
He added that they decided to boycott him till they arrive at final decision in the matter.
As per the rule of village, those killed a cow should stay alone away from the village for a year cooking for himself.
Tiwari also said that his mother Cheriya Devi had visited him asking to attend a panchayat which was scheduled to be held to discuss the issue.
“She requested me to attend the panchayat. An hour after she left, we came to know through a locals that Ramu had committed suicide by jumping in front of the train,” he said.
