After disturbing, viral images of a tribal man from Odisha carrying his dead wife on his shoulders not able to perform the last rituals, a vagrant man from the city of Hyderabad carrying his wife’s corpse in a pushcart for over 60 kilometres, and the helplessness of a family who were forced to tow their daughter’s body in a trolley-rickshaw for last rites as no one came forward to help them, there now emerges a heartbreaking video of a man carrying the dead body of his brother on cycle at Majuli island in Brahmaputra in Guwahati, the constituency represented by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The video footage shows a man using a cycle to carry his 18 year old brother's body. He was crossing a bamboo bridge, which is the only link between his village, Luit Khabalu, and the mainland. Ambulances cannot travel due to the absence of a concrete bridge in the area, officials said.
The boy was taking his brother's body back home from the hospital to perform last rites, officials said. Officials clarified that they family hailing from a village situated 8 kms away, left with the body without waiting for the hospital’s hearse van driver to arrive.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed the Director, Health Services to rush to Majuli tonight and take stock of the circumstances leading to the incident.
