In a heartbreaking accident, an 11 year old boy drowned to death in a tank after he tried to retrieve a floating Quran from the pond, police said. Accroding to the latest rep[orts, police are trying to find the body from the pond.

The 11 year old was a student of a Madrasa, Kanzul-ul-Uloom in Shaheennagar doing his second year in the five year ‘Hifz’ (memorisation of Quran) course, reports Deccan Chronicle.

11 year old Faiz had gone to the ‘Sandal ki Bowli’ tank, some 500 metres from the seminary, at around 9 am, along with four other friends. The group spotted a religious book floating in the water.

Seeing Faiz drowning one of his friends informed a local who then contacted the police. As the police arrived, the children rushed to the Madrasa and informed the management.

Police and fire force reached the spot and began efforts to retrieve the body and efforts are still continuing. By evening, police called in expert swimmers and local municipal authorities arranged water pumps to empty the tank. TRS legislator Teegala Krishna Reddy also reached the spot, but heavy rains hampered the effort.

Following his death, Shaheennagar residents have demanded that the tank be barricaded to prevent more such deaths.

Locals said this was not the first time someone drowned in the tank. “A few years ago, two youngsters drowned there, but the authorities have taken no measures to prevent such tragedies,” said Mohammed Ali, a local businessman.

Police have registered a case under Section 174 (suspicious death) of CrPC and are investigating. They are probing how and why the children came out of the Madrasa in the morning. The management clarified that the children were out as it was their weekly holiday on Friday.
