Tension gripped Sigra area of Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi on late Sunday night after members of Muslim and Hindu community clashed after a BJP MLA allegedly tried to encroach land for a proposed Mosque. Heavy police have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
As per reports, the clash erupted after supporters of BJP MLA from Pindra seat of Varanasi Awadhesh Singh started erecting a boundary wall around the land, which he has been allegedly holding and is said to be of a proposed Mosque.
When some local Muslims reached the spot and opposed the construction, it led to an argument. While the Muslims were shouting slogans and asking the police to stop the construction, stones were thrown at them. Following this, stone pelting started from both sides leaving around ten people injured.
According to SSP RK Bhardwaj, a case is pending in the high court with regard to the “disputed land”, adjacent to a religious site in Lullapura locality. Police says a local lawyer used to keep his cattle on the same land. On Sunday, he was whitewashing the boundary wall of same land when someone mongered rumour that the land is being captured.
Following the incident, heavy police force was rushed to the area while district magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra and Bhardwaj also reached there. Police had to use mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd, with the use of tear gas and pepper bombs. Police has imposed Section 144 at the site. They claimed that tension was spontaneous, not planned.
According to local sources quoted by Two Circles, the alleged land grabber MLA had the land in possession from past few years and used to tie his cows at the land. But on Sunday, he suddenly started building a wall around the land.
The administration is put on high alert with the incident as the area usually gets a higher number of Shiva worshipers in the Month of Saawan, which currently going on.
