In a country where police and security forces are allegedly using ‘encounter’ route ‘to get rid of’ political dissidents, a police officer has been now been accused of threatening a right activist to kill her in an encounter.
Shabnam Hashmi, a renowned human right activist based in Delhi, has filed a complaint with police commissioner that she has been threatened by a sub inspector. She also released audio tape of the conversation she had with the police officer.
“I was directly threatened that I will be killed in an encounter,” Hashmi told SouthLive, She informed that she was threatened by a man who claimed to be Sub Inspector Sandip Malik from Lajpat Nagar Police Station on Friday night.
According to Hashmi, Haseen, husband of Mubina, one of the pass-outs of a coaching centre in Jaitpur run by an NGO Pehchan, received a call from cop Sandip Malik. The policeman threatened him and asked him to come to the police station. His wife then allegedly called up the director of Pehchan Farida Khan who passed on this information to Shabnam Hashmi, who is a founding trustee of the NGO. According to Shabnam, she called the policeman ‘just to know why he was calling Haseen to the Police station’. The policemen allegedly used filthy language and threatened her.
I called up the police station to find out what is happening, and this man just took off. He was abusing, shouting and threatening. The conversation which was full of abuses, using highly derogatory and uncivilised languageShabnam Hashmi, Social Activist
Hashmi says she could not record the initial part of the conversation as there was no call recorder on her phone. She called up the cop again after downloading a call-recorded and released the audio. “The earlier conversation was a lot more threatening and abusive as compared to what has been recorded,” she says.
I was directly threatened that I will be killed in an encounter. The police officer claimed that there is the new law according to which whoever doesn’t have an Aadhaar and address proof should be surrounded and killedShabnam Hashmi, Social Activist
Audio of the recording.
“It is not important that he was threatening me. What is of more importance is that he was saying the police can kill anyone in an encounter the country,” Shabnam Hashmi told SouthLive.
He was claiming that every police station was told to do this. Anyone who does not have an Aadhaar card or an address proof should be just killed. He was talking about instructions given to police in border areas. and that is what they have been doing. They will catch anybody, claim they are a Bangladeshi and kill themShabnam Hashmi, Social Activist
The activist also alleged that the police did not give any reason for summoning Haseen at night.
Now communalism and hatred are actually institutionalised. And it is very much there in the police, unfortunately also in the armyShabnam Hashmi, Social Activist
The kind of statements that we are hearing from police and army chief are worrisome.
ANHAD, a civil rights group, contacted the Lajpat Nagar police station to know about the ‘sub inspector’ . The police station confirmed that it has a constable by the name of Sandip Malik but he is not Sub Inspector.
