Chandigarh stalking case: Haryana govt transfers victim’s father hours after BJP leader’s son denied bail again

The BJP-led Haryana government on Tuesday transferred senior IAS officer VS Kundu, whose daughter was stalked by BJP state president Subhash Barala’s son Vikas last month bringing huge embarrassment to the saffron party. Notably, the development came hours after a Chandigarh court denied Vikas Barala bail in the stalking case.

VS Kundu, who had been overseeing the Haryana Tourism Department, has now been posted as the additional chief secretary of the state Science and Technology Department, The Indian Express reported.

Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar were arrested on 9 August for stalking and trying to abduct Varnika Kundu on the night of 9 August, when she was driving to Panchkula from Chandigarh.

According to reports, the transfer order does not mention the government’s reason to move Kundu to a new post

“It is up to the government where it deputes me keeping in view my capabilities. I don’t have any problem with it. I never tried to stop my transfer order,” the bureaucrat was quoted saying.

Observing that the Vikas Barala behaved “like a roadside Romeo” and that it was “not a case where benefit of bail should be given,” the court rejected the bail application on Tuesday.

The duo were arrested but released on bail within hours, as they were earlier charged with stalking and wrongful restraint, which are both bailable offences. However, they were later charged with attempted abduction, which is a non-bailable offence, and were denied bail on 29 August.
