After a video went viral over social media which shows a BJP leader from Telangana allegedly canning Dalits and forcing them to take dips in dirty water after the men questioned the leader over illegal mining of gravel, Telangana’s Nizamabad police charged him of mistreating fellow beings on Monday.
The incident happened in September but came to light only on Sunday after the video went viral on various groups on social media platform.
M Bharat Reddy, BJP’s former district general secretary, has been charged based on a complaint filed by a local Dalit leader Manikolla Gangadhar representing Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS), an organisation that fights for categorisation of reservations for the Scheduled Castes, under the SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act.
“Reddy is absconding. We will arrest him, once we track him down” Nizamabad (rural) circle inspector of police N Buchaiah was quoted saying.
The inspctor also adds it is not clear when the incident happened as the Dalit men were scared to come forward fearing threats from Reddy.
According to the complaint, Reddy “punished” the two Dalits – Kondra Lakshman and Rajeshwar – from Abhangapatnam village as they questioned quarrying of gravel from the nearby fields at Errakunta pond without a permit from the government.
The viral video shows an angry Reddy canning the two men while abusing them. While the men plead for mercy, Reddy does not heed to their cries but continues with his inhumanity and forces them to take dips in muddy water. When one of them tries to tell him what he was doing was wrong as he did not have permission, the BJP leader scolds him and threatens to beat him up.
