The Election Commission on Thursday named the O Panneerselvam camp ‘AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma’ with the symbol of electricity pole, while the team Sasikala has been named ‘AIADMK Amma’ with hat symbol for the ensuing RK Puram by-poll.
In the hearing before the EC, the commission reportedly suggested autorikshaw symbol for Sasikala faction, but they demanded hat.
On Wednesday, the commission has frozen the ‘two leaves’ symbol, over which both factions expressed shock.
The Election Commission has said it delivered a temporary verdict because there wasn't enough time to examine documents submitted by both sides and take a fair decision. It says both sides can submit extra documents and make their case again before 17 April.
It was reported that while Sasikala’s group wanted “ AIADMK Amma” OPS wanted the name almost similar “Amma AIADMK.”.
Sasikala’s nephew and the AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran will be contesting against OPS camp’s E Madhusudanan.
Meanwhile, superstar Rajinikanth has said he supports none of the candidates in the upcoming bypolls.
Jayalalithaa contested from RK Nagar in north Chennai in the 2015 by-poll after her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case. She was re-elected from the same constituency in the May 2016 assembly elections. While Jayalalithaa won by a margin of 97,218 votes, Shimla Muthuchozhan of the DMK was the runner-up with 57,673 votes in May last year.
The RK Nagar constituency has been under the AIADMK's control from 2001, when PK Sekar Babu won the Assembly Elections there. Fifteen years later, it was handpicked by Jayalalithaa to show her might at the 2016 Assembly Elections.
Filing of nominations for the 12 April byelection in RK Puram, which has been remaning vacant since Jayalaithaa’s demise, began on 16 March. Scrutiny of nominations would take place on 24 March. The results will be declared on 17 April.
