Compared to Bollywood and Kollywood, Mollywood is a significantly smaller industry. With the income amount of the super actors from Hindi and Tamil industry, 4 or 5 big budget movies can be produced in Malayalam. Taking into account the income rates of super stars from Mollywood, Mohanlal earns the highest. Among the young generation, heartthrob actors, Prithviraj earns the most. Most comedians and actors who take up character roles work on a daily wage basis.
Competing with Tamil or Telugu film industry is a dream for Mollywood, there has been a drastic change in the income rates of most super stars hailing from Mollywood. The below list of the income rates has been collected from the producers and distributors of the small South Indian film industry.
Mohanlal (4-5 crore)
Mohanlal earns the highest in Mollywood. The warm welcome from Telugu film industry after the success of ‘Janata Garage’ and the record breaking ‘Pulimurugan’ has altered his incomes rates to a higher note.In 2015 Mohanlal’s charged 3 crore for a movie of which 70 percent of the total should nbe handed over to the actor in advance. After the grand success of ‘Janata Garage’ and ‘Pulimurugan’, Mohanlal charges 8 crore from Tamil and Telugu films while he charges 4-5 crore for Malayalam projects. 5 crore would be asked if the Malayalam movie is a big budget flick.
The record for the highest first day collection and the total gross collection for a Mollywood movie belongs to Mohanlal.
Mammootty ( 2-2.5 crore)
Though Mammootty does not have any superhit movies in the near past, he earns a sum of 2 - 2.5 crore. Mammootty hiked his income charges after the success of ‘Bhaskar the Rascal’. If the projects that he has contracted for 2017, crosses 50 crore in the collection record, estimates are that he would inflate his incomes rates.
Dileep (2-2.5 crore including distribution rights)
Taking into consideration the box office collection results for the last 15 years, Dileep is the actor who reaped success during the festive seasons. Apart from an income of 2 crore, Dileep takes the distribution rights for overseas and Central Kerala. Mammootty and Dileep shares the same position in terms of income.
Prithviraj Sukumaran ( 1.5-2 crore)
In Mollywood earnings list, Prithviraj takes the fourth position. If Prithviraj takes up a project out of his own Production house, he charges 1.5 crore to 2 crore, also considering the budget of the movie. For big budget movies, blocking a couple of days, rather than the normal, Prithvi demands 2 crore. Karnan, the Prithviraj starrer directed by RS Vimal, is said to be the most expensive project of Mollywood for which Prithvi will demand a hike. For Bollywood-Tamil flicks, Prithvi charges more than that of what he demands from Mollywood.
Nivin Pauly ( 1 crore)
Premam, a movie that took a toll in Mollywood and Kollywood, increased nivin Pauly’s stardom and commercial value. With the establishment of his space in tamil industry, Nivin who demanded only 50 Lakhs, increased his income rates. Nivin has signed the contract for two Tamil flicks, for which is is expected that he would charge a rate that is more than what he demands from Mollywood.
Dulquer Salmaan ( 75 Lakhs)
Though did not have any superhits for 2016, it was the same year he increased his income rates. Audience and filmmakers place a lot of expectations on Dulquer’s movies. If the movies that he has committed for the coming year, flushes the box office, Dulquer’s would be either on par with Nivin Pauly or higher than him. Dulquer’s movie gets the highest initial collection when compared to other actors of his generation. ‘Charlie’ and ‘Kali’ had set new records of first day collections. Apart from Mollywood, Dulquer is eyeing Kollywood as well.
Biju Menon ( 75 Lakhs)
The success of ‘Vellimoonga’ increased the star value of Biju Menon. The actor increased his earnings from 50 Lakhs to 75 Lakhs. With the victory of ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’ in 2016, Biju Menon began concentrating more on superstar solo hero projects.
Fahadh Faasil ( 65-70 Lakhs)
During 2011-2012, Fahadh Faasil topped the rankings among all the new generation actors. There was a time when new and experienced directors wrote stories to mould Fahadh into the script. In 2013, his stardom began falling, following the not so successful movies he had taken up in the previous years. Fahadh Faasil returned back with a blow to the industry with ‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’ and increased his rates to 70 Lakhs. For 2017, in Tamil, Fahadh will be next seen as the lead role in Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s movie and and as a villain in Mohan Raja’s flick. Next movie of ‘Maheshinte Prathikaaram’ team will hit the theatres in 2017.
Suresh Gopi ( 70 Lakhs)
Though there has not been any successful movie for Suresh Gopi for quite sometime, the actor had demanded 70 Lakhs for ‘Rudra Simhasanam’ and ‘My God’. The villain character taken up by the actor in Tamil movie ‘I’ was also one of the reasons why the actor increased his earnings rate. The second movie of the ‘Lelam’ series will Suresh Gopi’s movie for 2017.
Jayasurya ( 60 Lakhs)
Jayasurya is an actor who is applauded for appearing in reel with characters belonging to different genres. In his hit chart, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Pretham’ and ‘Su.. Su... Sudhi Vathmeekam’ are few of the superhits of the actor for 2016. Jayasurya demands 50-60 Lakhs for his movies.
Kunchacko Boban ( 60 Lakhs)
SInce the actor nothing to claim as his superhits in 2016, he did not increase his earning rates. The actor’s next movie, due to be released in 2017, by Rajesh Pillai will have Bobsn working with the House without accepting even a single penny.
Jayaram ( 50 Lakhs)
After years, a Jayaram movie in 2016 that reaped success in box office is ‘Aadupuliyattam’. Jayaram who had declared that he would be giving his 100 percent to movies that would give him a great success demands 50 Lakhs for his flicks for the last two years. ‘Achayans’ and ‘Sathya’ are the actor’s upcoming movies.
Asif Ali ( 35 Lakhs)
With the success of Anuraga Karikkin Vellam, the actor has taken a short break and decides to return back to reel life with the second part of ‘Honey Bee’.
Tovino Thomas ( 30 Lakhs)
Raising from the stand of character role to lead play, ‘Guppy’ was Tovino’s movie for 2016.
Unni Mukundan ( 30 Lakhs)
For 2016, In Malayalam, Unni Mukundan took up ‘Style’, ‘Oru Murai Vanthu Paarthaya’ while after the success of ‘Janata Garage’ in Telugu, he is now acting in a movie pairing with Anushka Shetty.
Nayantara ( 1 crore)
Among the female actors in Tamil film industry, Nayantara demands the highest. In 2015 and 2016 Nayantara had consecutive superhits, that too for solo heroine projects which directly affected the hike in her earnings. Though Nayantara is a leading actress in Kollywood, she does not hesitate to do good Malayalam projects. For the latest projects that Nayantara did in Malayalam, she demanded 75 Lakhs for ‘Life of Josutty’ and 1 crore for ‘Puthiya Niyamam’.
Manju Warrier ( 65-70 Lakhs)
Though Manju Warrier returned to Mollywood with her superhit movie ‘How Old Are You’, she does not have any other superhits so far. But still the actress is titled as the Lady superstar of Mollywood. ‘Care of Saira Banu’ is her latest movie so far.
Honey Rose ( 8 Lakhs)
Being an upcoming artist of the industry, the actress only demands 8 Lakhs for her movies.
Kavya Madhavan ( 8 Lakhs)
Kavya Madhavan has decided to concentrate on the selection of the movies she is taking up. ‘Akashvani’ and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s ‘Pinneyum’ were her movies for 2016. Kavya Madhavan demands 8-10 Lakhs.
The upcoming artist who began concentrating on Telugu movies, demands 10 Lakhs from Mollywood while her rates for Telugu is 20 Lakhs.
