Bollywood actress Vidya Balan was all set to take up the role of legendary writer Kamala Surayya aka Kamala Das in the biopic ‘Aami’ by director Kamal. But days before the scheduled shooting of the movie was to begin, Vidya opts out of the movie due to ‘creative differences’, and will not be playing the role anymore, confirms the director and sources close to the actor.
‘Vidya liked the script and still would like to do the film. But something was added to the final script at the last moment which she didn’t approve of. She has not been able to be part of long discussions with the writer and the director to sink into the role,’ says Vidya’s team.
The shooting was to begin by 19 December but due to inconveniences expressed by the actress, the shooting schedule had to be postponed, said Kamal speaking to SouthLive.
Five days to the start of the scheduled shoot Vidya called me and said that she could not sink into the character completely. Vidya said that she was half minded about the role. After all preparations for the movie, I had send her the flights tickets to fly to Kerala.Kamal,Director
Completing the preparations of the biopic, Kamal had already appointed popular actress-anchor Sreedhanya to take up Malayalam classes for the actor. Few photoshoots during the costume trial were published in the media. After the actor rejected the role, Director Kamal took efforts to have a conversation directly with the her, through Oscar winner Resul Pookutty and few others.
There were earlier reports that Vidya declined the movie due controversies between BJP and the director Kamal, over the director’s remarks on the playing of the national anthem in theatres. But Vidya’s spokesperson slammed this as fake reports, but even confirmed to SouthLive two weeks before that the project is very much on the go and that the shooting of the biopic was delayed due to cinema strike.

BJP had earlier staged a protest in front of Kamal’s house in connection with the row over the playing of national anthem in theatres. Kamal, the chairman of the recently-concluded International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), had objected to the police entering theatres to check people who did not stand when the national anthem was being played. The police action came after the BJP had complained that the Supreme Court order on playing the national anthem in theatres was not being followed.
