After creating its share of controversies and uncertainties, the biopic based on the legendary life of poet Kamala Surayya aka Madhavikutty got under way in her ancestral home at Punnayurkulam in Thrissur district.
Just before the pooja ceremony the first look of the Manju Warrier who dons the role of Aami was released.
The pooja ceremony was attended by the relatives of Madhavikutty, her friends and writers.
Manju Warrier was ecstatic at the site. Though she expressed her apprehension on how far she would be able to ‘live the life’ of Madhavikutty, who was no less than an iconoclastic figure in Kerala.
Madhavikutty through her prose and poem written in both English and Malayalam broke the well laid out conventions of Malayalam literature. Keralites could not fathom her way of life which created controversies after controversies. Her autobiography ‘My Story’ which was published both in Malayalam and English is noted for its no hold barred approach.
Manju who has been studying Madhavikutty ever since Vidya Balan opted out of the film citing ‘creative indifferences’, is aware of the challenges before her.
“When the movie was first announced it was never in my dreams that I would have the luck to take up the role. When I heard that Vidya Balan will be taking the role I thought the movie would be a hit. Many asked me after Vidya backed out, if I would be taking the role but back then it was too early for me to even hope for such a big role. Days later Kamal sir called me up and asked if I could take the role. If sir has the hope that I can take the role, then I will put in my 100% to the movie” said an excited Manju Warrier to SouthLive.
Manju Warrier herself says that it was never easy to get into the shoes of Kamala Das who existed somewhere between the reality and imaginary.
I am being Aami in the heart and in dreams. Madhavikutty flourished somewhere between the reality and the imaginative mind. It is not easy to enter that world. I hope to be guided my the most talented Kamal sir. Her fingers by which she created magical world literature, I feel she is now touching my head to catapult me into a trance. With lots of prayers and hopes I am becoming ‘Aami’Manju Warrier
The first phase of the shooting will go on for two weeks after which the second schedule will begin within a span of two months gap. The gap is to get the perfect makeover for the character.
In the first look of the movie Manju Warrier seems to have bagged the perfect look of the writer’s early years.
