Young rationalist hacked to death after posting atheistic thoughts on Facebook

A young rationalist and activist was brutally hacked to death by unknown assailants in Ukkakadam of Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. The body of the 31-year-old activist of Dravida Viduthalai Kazhakam (DVK) was found with multiple injuries in an open field in the heart of the city, around midnight on Thursday. According to reports, one person has been surrendered before a Magistrate Court on Friday.

According to Police, the deceased identified as Farooq, an iron scrap merchant from Bilal Estate in South Ukkadam, was very vocal in his rationalistic thoughts. A senior police officer said that Farook was an active member of the DVK and his views on religion evoked strong opposition from members of his own community. He recently uploaded pictures and messages of his atheist ideology on his Facebook page. Farook was also administering a WhatsApp group where he posted rationalistic views against his religion.

Farooq had left his house on Thursday night after receiving a phone call. When he reached near a sewage treatment plant near Ukkadam bypass road, the assailants intercepted him in two-wheelers and auto. Though he had tried to escape by turning away his moped, the gangsters hacked him with sickle and knives.

Hearing loud noise, the local residents reached the spot and found the victim lying dead in a pool of blood. But the assailants managed to flee away. Following this the deputy commissioner of police Saravanan inspected the spot and held enquiries.

We are looking into multiple angles and it is yet to be known if he was executed by communal groups for personal reasons. One of his controversial religious posts shared in FB attracted criticisms. He was also detained recently under Goondas Act in connection with the violence that arose following the murder of Hindu Munnani leader Sasikumar

Tension prevailed for a short while at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where a post-mortem was performed on the deceased as members of DVK refused to receive his body demanding that the assailants be arrested. After police promised speedy and impartial action, the relatives took the body for doing the last rites.

Heavy police force was deployed at the premises of the hospital to prevent any untoward incidents. Police who are privy to the investigation said that they are probing on certain leads on the brutal murder.
