Gangai Amaran, music director has lashed out at his brother and music maestro Ilaiyaraaja for sending legal notices to singer S P Balasubramanyam for singing songs he composed without prior permission. In an interview to a television channel Gangai Amaran termed his brother’s move as foolishness. Gangai Amaran is also a music composer.

“ The move by Ilaiyaraaja is ridiculous, If he forbids singers from signing his songs then he will have to send legal notices to almost all individuals who sings his songs” Gangai Amaran said in the interview.


Gangai Amaran has criticised Ilayiraja on several other occasion also. The news of Ilaiyaraaja sending legal notices to S P Balasubramanyam when the later took to Facebook, to disclose this. In that message he said he is not aware of the legalities involved in singing songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja without prior permission. SPB who is US said he will henceforth be singing songs of other music directors.

After SPB’s Facebook post Ilaiyaraaja was trolled and criticised on social media. This prompted SPB to write another Facebook post in which he requested all to desist from making the issue sensational.

The singer is currently on his SPB 50 tour which started in August in Toronto along with playback singers Chithra and Charan. The group performed in Russia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and did several shows in India as well. The singer having a span of five decades relation with the director, received a legal notice from the music director stating he was not allowed to sing his songs, without his prior permission. The legal notice was also send to singers, Chithra and Charan as well.
