Kerala all set for Nehru trophy boat race, record number of boats to take part in 65th edition

Nearly 80 boats will take part in the 65th edition of Nehru trophy boat race that will be held at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha on Saturday.

According to reports, this is the first time such a huge number of boats participating in the race.

Organisers said all arrangements have been made for the grand event and the races will be held in the afternoon.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the event while the race will be telecast live by Doordarshan.

Among the 78 total boats, 24 would be snake boat with around 100 rowers in it, of which 20 will take part in the race and four in an exhibition race.

Nine Veppu A Grade boats, six Veppu B Grade boats, five Iruttukuthi A Grade boats, 25 Iruttukuthi B Grade boats and three Churulan boats will take part in the race.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society, which organises the race, told media that a digital display system and a foolproof mechanised starting system have been set up for the first time in the history of the boat race.

They said the new system needed to be set up as several disputes had taken place in the past over starting time.

Organisers added that special boat services have been arranged to take the spectators to the spot adding that the entry would be restricted for those collected their pass.
