Amid the attack against Hyderabad-based Dalit scholar Kancha Ilaiah over his book on the Arya Vysya community, Telugu Desam Party MP T. G. Venkatesh, a prominent leader of the community, has called Prof. Ilaiah as a “traitor” whose writing was intended to divide society. He deserved to be “hanged in public like in the Gulf”, he said.
Another Youth leader of the community Doondi Rajesh launched a hunger strike near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the One Town area in Vijayavada demanding a ban on the book ‘Samajika Smugglurlu Komatollu (Komatollu are social smugglers)‘ and criminal action against the author.
Ilaiah, a professor at the Osmania University had lodged a police complaint alleging threat to life over his book on Arya Vysyas caste. In the complaint lodged with the police station, Professor Ilaiah said he received threatening and abusive phone calls from unidentified persons over his book.
The Vysya community in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are up in arms against the book, `Samajika Smugglurlu Komatollu', which describes the community as `social smugglers'.
Participating in a round table conference organised by the community in Hyderabad, Venkatesh said that he would file cases against Kancha, bring the issue to the Prime Minister's notice, and even raise it in Parliament.
Meanwhile, Ilaiah defended his book, telling reporters earlier, “Social Smuggling is a phrase. It is the economic process of exploitation, which means earning in business but not investing back into society.”
Another TD leader and actor Kavitha said Prof. Ilaiah was “more dangerous” that Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim Singh and Nizamabad TRS MLA Ganesh Bigala said there were doubts that Prof. Ilaiah was an agent of a foreign country.
Kancha had earlier declared, “If I die, Arya Vysyas will be responsible for my death.”
